Biology
Biology is at the centre of what we are and the world we live in. The developments in the Biological sciences are rapid and fascinating. A new wonderful discovery every day – find out what it is all about!
AS Biology
You will study the biochemistry of life, cells and how they interact, biodiversity and the evolution of food and health. This is a wide-ranging course to inspire you and complement studies in other sciences, sport or psychology. The course gives you an insight into the biological issues which we increasingly see in the news and social debate.
A2 Biology
This is a course which builds on and extends the AS topics to look at the physiology of excretion, communication, photosynthesis and respiration, along with in-depth study of issues such as gene technologies, environmental systems and sustainability and behaviour.
AS/A2 Assessment
The course involves both coursework and end of module exams. Coursework forms 20% of both the AS and A2 qualifications. Practical field work is also an integral part of the course. We have links with local biotechnology research facilities and the university, which gives the opportunity for visits and meetings with leaders in their field.
Practical skills are based on the assessment of key skills in tasks set by the exam board covering a wide variety of contexts.
