Mathematics

Students in Year 11 in September 2015 will be the last year group to follow the existing GCSE specification.

GCSE Maths explores topics in Number, Algebra, Shape and Data, providing the functional knowledge required for further studies in Mathematics and for every day life.

GCSE Maths has a Foundation and Higher tier using the current grading system of G – A*.  The students are assessed via two examinations, both taken at the end of year 11.  Paper 1 is a 70 mark, non-calculator exam and Paper 2 is a 105 mark, calculator exam.

Student in Year 9 and 10 in September 2015 will be following the new GCSE Maths course.

New GCSE Maths is a three-year course designed to equip students with the mathematical foundation needed to reach their future destination.   The course develops knowledge in mathematical areas including: Number, Algebra, Ratio Proportion and Rates of Change, Geometry and Measures, Probability and Statistics.

GCSE Maths has a Foundation and Higher tier and is graded using the new 1 – 9 grading system.  The students are assessed via three examinations that are all taken at the same tier at the end of year 11.  All three papers are worth 80 marks and are equally weighted.  One paper is calculator and the other two are non-calculator.  The new exam papers consist of a mixture of question styles, from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems.  The mathematical demand increases as a student progresses through the paper.

The Royal Institution of Great Britain

Four year 8 students from Netherhall School who attended the mathematics masterclasses were invited to visit the Royal Institution in London. The students were Lewis Bushen, Fabio Schwandt, Benjamin Wilson and Samuel Kelly. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to participate in and listen to some great mathematics in a beautiful and a historic setting. This was the same building that is televised for the Christmas lectures. They listened and participated in lectures given by physicists, scientists and mathematicians who use mathematics and problem solving skills in the 'Real World'. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and found it extremely inspirational experience.
