Teacher Wins Coaching Award

Netherhall mathematics teacher, Mr Jones, has recently being awarded British Triathlon’s National Children’s Coach of the Year for his work in setting up a junior triathlon club. He received his award at a prestigious Awards Dinner near Leicester and is pictured with 2012 Olympic hopeful Helen Jenkins, who won the Women’s Elite Triathlete of the Year and is currently ranked fourth in the world.

Triathlon involves swimming, biking and running with no rest between the disciplines and is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Mr Jones said “I am surprised and delighted to receive this national accolade. It is a great honour and is a credit to the total commitment of our junior triathletes and the coaching team of ten volunteers. This has allowed the club to grow the membership to more than 80 children since it was launched just over a year ago. I think it was this unprecedented growth for a junior triathlon club that impressed the judges so much”

As well as coaching, Mr Jones competes regularly and has represented Great Britain at four World Age Group Triathlon Championships. He qualified to compete at the World Championships in Budapest this year but was unable to take part due to injury.
